Hot! Whats Wrong With Dwight Howard

The rumors of the day in the NBA, and they could change as you're reading this article, concern a potential trade in which Andrew Bynum moves to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Before New York Knick fans inquire about how the Lakers - and Miami, Boston, and other members of NBA royalty - always seem to land the player they want and/or need, keep in mind Howard still has to agree to an extension with Los Angeles.

NBA general managers have to be secretly wondering if they should pursue Howard, who has alternately played the role of coach-killer in Orlando and Mr. Indecision everywhere else. What is the problem, Dwight? While it seems, or at least reports indicate, that he's finally willing to commit to the Lakers, we've traveled down this bumpy road before, and it features a labyrinth of detours.

At one time, Howard publicly stated he would stay in Orlando. Then he backpedaled so fast, it's a miracle he didn't fall head over heels. New Jersey was the next location, probably because his friend Deron Williams was the voice in his ear. Then, he had the opportunity to play his contract out and select any team he wanted - any team in the NBA with salary cap room that he wanted! And typical of people with phobias about decision making, he dipped his toe in the water instead of diving in, and opted to stay with Orlando for another year. We all know he wanted out. He practically drove Stan Van Gundy to the exit gate on the Magic property. Yet he stayed.

Since then, he's once again indicated he's ready to go. We're back to New Jersey again. Oops, no we're not. Now, it's the Lakers - again! Is there an NBA fan alive who doesn't want to see Howard land somewhere - please! Frankly, he's devalued his character enough now, that James Dolan, who so badly bungled the Jeremy Lin contract, might actually crowbar the Knicks into the trade equation. James Dolan and - that's a match made in heaven.

Glenn Vallach has been a basketball fan, player, and coach during his lifetime and, as such, an ardent follower of the NBA even with all its warts. He have also been a New York Knick fan since the days of Howie Komives and Walt Bellamy, when he regularly boarded the IRT Subway at 180th Street in the Bronx for a trip to the Garden to see his heroes.
