Former Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins expected to backup a veteran like Peyton Manning, not fellow rookie Robert Griffin I.
Chosen by the Redskins in the fourth round on Saturday, Cousins says he was shocked by the selection, which came 100 picks after Washington chose Griffin No. 2.
He expected to be groomed behind a veteran as a future starter.
I was shocked, knowing what they had done with the No. 2 pick, and I hadn t talked to them that much in the process, Cousins told The Dan Patrick Show. I would have said probably Denver or Philadelphia, in terms of teams that had shown interest and were looking for a quarterback.
I still have an opportunity to learn from a nine-year veteran like Rex Grossman. I ll be the first one to say it was a surprising pick to me as well, but coach Shanahan was there in San Francisco with Joe Montana and Steve Young, so he s not new to this. I know my opportunity is going to come sooner or later.
That opportunity would likely come only if RG3 gets hurt or performs poorly enough to be benched for another rookie. But first Cousins would have to beat out a former starter in Grossman.
